Meet THCP and CBDP: Study Reveals the Identification of Two New Cannabinoids

At present, almost 150 phytocannabinoids have been detected in the cannabis plant, although few have been isolated and studied. While this has been due in part to legal reasons—cannabis is still illegal at a federal level in the US, rendering research tricky—it’s also because most strains of cannabis are THC- or CBD-dominant, making the isolation and study of minor cannabinoids challenging.

THC found more important for therapeutic effects in cannabis than originally thought

In a new study titled, "The Association between Cannabis Product Characteristics and Symptom Relief," published in the journal Scientific Reports, UNM researchers Sarah See Stith, assistant professor in the Department of Economics, and Jacob Miguel Vigil, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, found that THC and CBD contents were the most important factor for optimizing symptom relief for a wide variety of health conditions.

The current pharmacological treatment for schizophrenia is only partially effective and mainly for positive symptoms. This has led investigators to investigate new pharmacological targets and the endocannabinoid system has been one of the newest ones. Over the past few decades, increasing evidence has shown the presence of endocannabinoid system abnormalities in schizophrenia. However, the current studies on the potential therapeutic effects of CBD are not conclusive and the mechanism of action is poorly understood. The discrepancies in clinical results could be related to different doses of CBD, stages of psychosis, or possibly heterogeneity of schizophrenia itself.

In two recent studies titled, "Patient-Reported Symptom Relief Following Medical Cannabis Consumption," and "Effectiveness of Raw, Natural Medical Cannabis Flower for Treating Insomnia under Naturalistic Conditions" published in the journals, Frontiers in Pharmacology and Medicines, respectively, UNM Department of Psychology Associate Professor Jacob Miguel Vigil and UNM Department of Economics Assistant Professor Sarah See Stith, document that patients experienced statistically and clinically significant therapeutic benefits when they used cannabis for symptoms ranging from chronic pain to insomnia.

Nationwide US studies report that, compared to non-users, cannabis users actually have a lower prevalence of obesity. Intrigued, she began to investigate. Earlier this year, her team surveyed more than 600 cannabis users living in US states where the drug is legal about their exercise habits, among other health factors. Four out of five respondents said that they use marijuana right before or after exercising. And those users spent more minutes per week exercising than users who didn’t mix the two. “We were shocked,” Bryan says.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a natural compound gaining a lot of popularity in the natural health world. CBD is one of the compounds called cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Some people believe that CBD can aid weight loss, but does it work? The initial results of studies into CBD and weight loss are promising and may prompt more research into the connection between them. CBD may be helpful for people looking to lose weight, burn calories, or suppress appetite, but it is vital not to overstate these claims. A healthful diet and plenty of exercise are still the best weight loss strategies.

SATURDAY, Dec. 7, 2019 (HealthDay News) -- Prescription-grade CBD may help control hard-to-treat seizures caused by a rare genetic disorder, a preliminary study suggests. The study involved 224 patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) -- a genetic condition that affects about one in 6,000 people, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It causes non-cancerous tumors to arise throughout the body, and -- in 90% of patients -- seizures that are often resistant to standard drugs. Researchers wanted to know whether these patients might respond to Epidiolex, a liquid medication that contains purified CBD (cannabidiol).

Tucked away in the quiet English countryside on more than 47 acres, GW Pharmaceuticals is doing something no other drug company can do: produce the only cannabis-based medication ever approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. That drug, a treatment for two rare types of epilepsy, inspired researchers to consider what other conditions cannabis might help. A new clinical trial at Montefiore Medical Center in New York will examine the effect of a cannabis compound called cannabidivarin, known as CBDV, on irritability and repetitive behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder. CBDV is a non-psychoactive chemical compound and does not cause a "high.
